The History of Trapet Estate
The Domaine Trapet Père et Fils, located in Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy, is an iconic reference in the Côte de Nuits. Founded in the late 19th century by Louis Trapet, the estate has endured through generations, preserving its family heritage while embracing innovative viticultural practices.
As early as the 1880s, Arthur Trapet, son of Louis, acquired prestigious parcels around Gevrey, contributing to the estate’s expansion. In response to the phylloxera crisis, he took the initiative to secretly graft vines onto American rootstocks—a practice that was forbidden at the time—thus playing a role in the preservation of Burgundy’s vineyards. Today, Jean-Louis Trapet, representing the seventh generation, leads the estate alongside his Alsatian wife, Andrée, and their sons, Pierre and Louis.
Viticulture and Winemaking : The Estate's Philosophy
A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, Jean-Louis Trapet began converting the estate to these practices in the mid-1990s, achieving Demeter certification in 2009. The vineyards are cultivated without synthetic chemicals, fostering biodiversity and the natural balance of the soils. In the cellar, winemaking is focused on expressing the purity of the terroir: fermentations occur with indigenous yeasts, and oak aging is carefully managed to preserve the elegance and finesse of the wines.
The Wine of Trapet Estate
The estate owns parcels in prestigious appellations, including three Grands Crus: Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, and Chapelle-Chambertin. The wines stand out for their aromatic complexity, depth, and exceptional aging potential. The cuvées from Gevrey-Chambertin, such as "Ostrea" and "1859", offer an authentic expression of Pinot Noir, combining power and refinement. Each bottle reflects the Trapet family’s dedication to producing wines that honor their terroir and heritage.
