Chassagne-Montrachet, the Excellence of Burgundy

Location

Chassagne-Montrachet is located in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, between the Puligny-Montrachet appellation (to the north) and Santenay (to the south). It is situated on the eastern slope of the Montrachet hill, which is renowned for producing some of the greatest white wines in the world. The appellation includes 55 Climats classified as Premier Crus and 3 Grands Crus shared with Puligny-Montrachet, such as the famous Montrachet.

The Terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet

The terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet is highly diverse, which strongly influences the character of the wines produced. The soil is primarily composed of limestone, but also contains traces of marl-limestone, scree, and clay sediments. This mix of soils allows for excellent moisture regulation and promotes the maturity of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vines are situated between 220 and 350 meters in altitude, benefiting from the oceanic climate with a continental influence.

Profil of the Premier Cru

The white wines of Chassagne-Montrachet are among the most famous in the world. They have a rich and complex style with floral aromas, white-fleshed fruits, and notes of hazelnut and minerality. On the palate, they are full-bodied and opulent, balanced by their freshness, evolving into flavors of butter and honey. The red wines, less well-known, made from Pinot Noir, are distinguished by aromas of red fruits, spices, and underbrush. Their tannic structure, initially robust, softens with age, bringing elegance and complexity.
