The History of Petrus

The history of Petrus is one of the most mysterious among the estates that define the fame of the Pomerol appellation. During the 19th century, the Arnaud family owned the property. Starting in 1925, Madame Loubat gradually acquired shares of the estate until she became its sole owner in 1945. From that point on, Petrus's reputation grew, establishing it among the Great Wines of Bordeaux. Indeed, Petrus wine was notably served at Queen Elizabeth II's wedding. The wine merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix began gradually buying shares in the estate and eventually secured exclusive distribution rights.

Viticulture and Winemaking : The Estate's Philosophy

Located at an altitude of 40 meters, the vineyard spans 11.5 hectares in the heart of the Pomerol appellation. The soil is a unique blend of gravel and clay, giving the wines an unparalleled elegance. The vineyard is primarily planted with Merlot, the emblematic grape of Pomerol wines. The grapes are entirely hand-harvested and then masterfully vinified by Olivier Berrouet. The wines are finally aged for several months in oak barrels.

The Wine of Petrus

Each year, Petrus perpetuates its expertise to offer an ever more exceptional wine. The power and aromatic complexity of this wine contribute to its prestige and renown. Petrus wine is distinguished by aromas of dark fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant. After several years in the cellar, its generous and intense texture is enriched by more developed notes of truffle and forest floor. These qualities attest to its exceptional aging potential, allowing Petrus wine to reach new heights over time.
