Château d'Yquem, located on the heights of Sauternes, is renowned for its prestigious history and unique production of sweet wines. Established in the 16th century by the Sauvage family, the estate began a tradition of expertise and a deep connection to the terroir that continues to this day. In 1785, the marriage of Françoise-Joséphine de Sauvage d'Yquem to Count Louis-Amédée de Lur Saluces strengthened this exceptional heritage.
In 1855, Château d'Yquem received the supreme distinction of Premier Cru Supérieur, a recognition that highlights its unique status among the great wines of Bordeaux. Today, this legacy is meticulously preserved, combining modern techniques with centuries-old tradition under the management of the LVMH group.
The philosophy of Château d'Yquem is based on a scrupulous respect for its exceptional terroir. Spanning 113 hectares, the vineyard is primarily planted with Sémillon, complemented by a proportion of Sauvignon Blanc to provide balance and acidity. The production process centers on achieving noble rot, a natural phenomenon brought about by morning fogs and the specific climate of Sauternes. This feature imparts the wine with its sweet, complex flavor.
Harvesting is conducted in multiple successive passes, with each grape picked individually at the peak of ripeness. Vinification is carried out with extreme precision, followed by aging in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, developing flavors of unmatched intensity and depth.
Château d'Yquem wine is celebrated for its aromatic richness and incredible aging potential, with some vintages capable of lasting over a century. The aromas reveal notes of exotic fruits, apricots, honey, and vanilla, complemented by subtle hints of saffron, caramel, and undergrowth as the wine ages. The wine’s exceptional structure, combined with its balanced sweetness, offers a unique sensory experience with each tasting. Château d'Yquem also produces, in small quantities and depending on climatic conditions, a dry white wine called "Y" d'Yquem, which embodies the same pursuit of excellence as its renowned sweet wine.
