Domaine de la Commaraine

The History of Domaine de la Commaraine

The history of Domaine de la Commaraine dates back to the 12th century. The estate was owned by the Jaboulet-Vercherre family for many years, and in 2018, an American couple, Denise Dupré and Mark Nunelly, decided to take over the operation of the estate to produce high-quality wines. Today, the estate is managed by Jean-Luc Vitoux, and the wines are vinified by Paul Krug.

Viticulture and Vinification: The Estate's Philosophy

The particularity of Domaine de la Commaraine is that much of its vineyard is located within a single enclosure, covering an area of 3.63 hectares : Le Clos de la Commaraine. Classified as a Pommard Premier Cru, it is one of the most prestigious climates in the Côte de Beaune. Having practiced sustainable viticulture for several years, the estate was converted to organic farming in 2017, with plans to convert to biodynamic farming for the 2025 vintage.

Since 2018, the estate has gradually resumed the cultivation of several vineyard plots, including a parcel of Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru "Aux Bousselots" in 2020 and a parcel of Volnay 1er Cru "En Champans" in 2023. Upon acquiring these parcels, conversions to organic farming and soil studies were initiated.

The Wines of Domaine de la Commaraine

For a very long time, the estate produced only one wine, the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos de la Commaraine Monopole. Today, Domaine de la Commaraine produces two Premiers Crus under the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, namely Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru "Roncière" and "Aux Bousselots", as well as a Village appellation, Chambolle Musigny "Les Condemennes".
