Volnay is an appellation located on the heights of the Côte de Beaune between the communes of Pommard and Meursault. The Volnay plots are supported by the small Chaignot mountain and are planted on steep slopes, which promote soil drainage, facing east and southeast. Benefiting from good sunshine, the grapes are able to ripen optimally while maintaining remarkable freshness. Today, there are 24 lieux-dits in village appellation and 29 Climats classified as Premier Crus.
The terroirs of Volnay are located at an altitude between 230 and 280 meters. The composition of the soils varies depending on the altitude. The soils are made up of different types of limestone depending on their position on the slope; at the top of the slopes, the limestone is more gravelly, while in the lower parts, the soils are richer in clay.
The complexity and diversity of the limestone present in the appellation’s soils give the wines great finesse and a particular elegance. The wines of the Volnay appellation are recognizable by their fine tannins, silky texture, and red fruit notes. As they age, these great wines will charm you with their aromatic complexity and their unique aromas of undergrowth and truffle.
