Around 1885, Jacques Lignier, then a team leader on an estate in the Côte de Nuits, acquired vineyard plots devastated by phylloxera. With the help of his son Jules, they replanted these lands and laid the foundations of the family estate. Over the decades, each generation has contributed to the expansion and reputation of the estate. Hubert Lignier, who took over the estate in 1959, notably introduced bottling at the property in 1973, further enhancing the estate's wines' renown. Today, his son Laurent continues this family tradition, focusing on environmentally friendly viticultural practices.
Domaine Hubert Lignier is deeply committed to sustainable and environmentally respectful viticulture. Since the 1990s, the estate has ceased using herbicides and insecticides, favoring manual soil cultivation. In 2016, a transition to organic farming was initiated, resulting in certification in 2019. The vineyards, predominantly planted with massal selections, receive meticulous care to preserve biodiversity and adapt to current climate challenges. In the cellar, winemaking methods are minimally interventionist, allowing the pure expression of the terroir. After manual harvesting and rigorous sorting, the grapes undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by extended aging in oak barrels, enabling the wines to develop complexity and depth.
The estate offers a diverse range of wines that reflect the richness of Burgundy’s terroirs. Among its flagship cuvées is the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru "Vieilles Vignes", sourced from vines planted between 1936 and 1966, delivering intense aromas and an elegant tannic structure. The Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Seuvrées", made from old vines, stands out for its depth and complexity. The estate also produces prestigious Grands Crus, such as Clos de la Roche and Charmes-Chambertin, renowned for their power and aging potential. Each wine is crafted with meticulous attention, reflecting the estate’s commitment to producing authentic and expressive wines.
