Château Margaux

The History of Château Margaux

It was from the 16th century that Château Margaux began to stand out for its wines, becoming one of the first organized and structured vineyards in Bordeaux. The successive owning families contributed to the trade and global renown of the Grands Vins of the Margaux appellation. The pinnacle of this recognition was the 1855 Classification, which elevated Château Margaux to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, thus confirming its status as a prestigious wine. Technical improvements to the vineyard and modernization have been the guiding principles of the Mentzelopoulos family, owners since 1977. In 2023, a generational shift marked the estate’s history when Corinne Mentzelopoulos handed over management to her children, Alexis and Alexandra.

Viticulture and Winemaking : The Estate's Philosophy

The alliance of respect for the terroir and continuous innovation leads to unique wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, spread over 85 hectares of red vines, are vinified like a work of art in wooden and stainless steel vats, with precise control of fermentations. The aging potential of Château Margaux wines lies particularly in their maturation in new barrels, imparting the tannic power and aromatic finesse essential for great aging wines.
